The Low Down on Chaweng
No CommentsChaweng is one of the most visited beaches in Thailand. It is located on the tropical island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. It is the longest beach on the island and is accompanied by a large urban area. Unlike Pattaya the development next to the beach is not composed of towering blocks of condominiums. There is more of an organic feel to Chaweng, as if it has been allowed to develop without any overarching plan.
The thing that must be remembered about Chaweng just as Bangkok and other places in Thailand is that your impression of the place is very much defined by the amount of money you have to spend. There is the backpacker Chaweng with its cheap bungalows near the beach for $15 a night, bars, 7-11s and motorbike taxis. There is also the luxury Chaweng with its private pool villas, 5 star service and exclusive dining spots. And there is also the seedy Chaweng with its massage parlors, go go bars and strip shows.
Everyone from the young to the old; from single people to families; and from Europeans to rich Thais go to Chaweng for their holidays. They are drawn by the great beach that has soft white sand and warm water. On a typical day the beach is lined with rows of sun loungers belonging to the various beach front establishments. People are playing on the beach, kayaking, lying and snorkeling in the sea and cold drink vendors and masseurs are patrolling up and down the beach looking for customers.
There are a lot of amenities and facilities in and around Chaweng. There are large supermarkets containing a plethora of imported goods; there are bowling alleys; there are dive shops; there are Indian tailors; there are spas and gyms; and there is a wealth of entertainment on offer. This ranges from cool beach front bars such as the Ark to Samba shows at the Brazilian restaurant called Zicos. People can enjoy live music and DJs at such places as Sweet Soul Café and the Green Mango near Chaweng Lake. There is of course a Reggae Pub and Chaweng even has its own version of the Black Moon Party. For many it is the sparkling and diverse nightlife of Chaweng that is the best part about the place.
And of course for those who eventually exhaust the possibilities of Chaweng, there is a whole island to explore just beyond the limits of the town.
