Replication of discs need not be expensive
No CommentsThere are a lot of differing opinions about the difference between disc duplication and replication. While replication means making an exact replica of an original, and duplication means making a duplicate copy of the original, both produce a copy of the original.
The process of creating many copies of the original – a large run – a opposed to a few copies – a small run – is often considered the difference; often the process is referred t as replication based on the run volume.
The process of replication is a different process. On a very large run, for example creating the DVD’s or CD’s you purchase in the stores, the data is not burned onto the disc as you would when creating a duplicate copy on your home computer. The disc is actually molded to be an exact replica of the original digital master disc. This process creates a disc to which data cannot be added or removed, and is more durable. The label forms part of the process, and cannot be removed without damaging the disc.

Given this process, many believe that there is no such thing as cheap DVD replication.
This is not really true, although you will want to send the job out to be done, unless you intend creating a business offering the molding replication service yourself. Sending the job out for large volumes will often be cheaper than burning many copies yourself. It also results in a more professional-looking finished product.
If, however, you consider the volumes to be the main difference in the process, there are inexpensive disc duplicators, which can burn many copies of the disc at once. These may well be worth considering, depending on your needs, and there is no difference in the data quality between the two methods.
With the burn process, however, you will need to print your artwork and label onto the disc afterwards. If you are planning on producing the case labels in-house you may want to invest in a colour scanner printer copier, possibly in laser as opposed to inkjet format.
No matter if you decide to duplicate many copies, or replicate many copies via the manufacturing process, it is possible to get the job done a lot more cheaply than you may imagine.
