Renewing the Look of Wood Furniture
No CommentsLarge cracks and serious warping of wooden outdoor furniture may be too difficult or impossible to repair. However, small cracks, discoloration and chipping is actually quite easy to repair. When a piece of wooden furniture becomes old, the ability to change its color and finish becomes possible. You see, outdoor wood furniture can be stripped down and refinished into any color you desire. Once the job is complete, the piece will exhibit the beauty it had when it was new.
To begin, you will need to do a simple wash using your garden hose. Wash every surface as well as you can, using a nylon brush to remove any stuck-on dirt. Make sure to get the underside where spider webs and dirt can get jammed. We will be refinishing all surfaces of the piece.
After it dries, you can use the same nylon brush to scrub down the piece with a brightening chemical. This substance, also known as wood cleaner, removes any surface dirt left on the wood. It removes some of the old finish and stain at the same time, leaving the original wood exposed. After cleaning thoroughly, rinse the piece once more.
Now comes the most complex yet most important part of the process- the sanding. Using a power sander is highly recommended for the most professional results. Using 100 grit sandpaper, sand every surface you can reach with the electric sander. Only a light layer needs to be removed. Areas which the bulky tool cannot access can be reached using regular sheets of sandpaper. All of the various sawdust can be brushed off with a hand brush.
Now it is time to choose your stain and apply it. Stain is applied with a brush and should be done evenly. Stains serve to alter the color of the wood while protecting it. Remember that this method only works on wood furniture, not something like a bubble chair which is made of plastic.
