Online Computer Backup Services – Pros And Cons
No CommentsOnline computer backup services have started to spring up over the past decade as broadband speeds have facilitated uploading larger amounts of data. This type of backup option is growing in popularity due to the ease of use of these systems. Here I’ll show you the advantages and disadvantages of using any of these types of services and what types of users they are best suited to.
Starting with the advantages; if you need to do a laptop data backup while traveling or on the road then the great thing is that you don’t need any additional hardware to make a backup copy (e.g. external hard drives, CD burners, CD media, etc.). As a result, you don’t have to worry about inadvertently losing these backup copies since they are stored on the online server.
Moreover, the online computer backup can be accessed from any machine in the world which is web enabled. Password protection is used to secure your data so you can be sure it is safe from others. In addition, the backup servers clone your information across several of their servers so that they are not dependent on one specific box (i.e. high-redundancy).
The disadvantages of online computer backups may however put some people off. To begin with, you still need to have a fast Internet connection especially when doing an initial backup. Subsequent backups will only clone files that are changes so often prove to be a lot quicker.
These services are also pricey. You have to factor in monthly subscription costs which are usually pro rata based (according to the volume of space you are allocated on the hard drive backup server). You may not be able to do a complete laptop data backup as the data limits on these services are usually around 1 to 2 GB. This may be okay for some people who only wish to do a partial backup of critical information.
