Mens Boardshorts and the Octagon
No CommentsI have two good friends who are now fully committed to the sport of MMA, or mixed martial arts. One is an instructor at a local Karate dojo and the other is a real estate agent looking to de-stress by hitting something (or someone). Their interest in the sport has been intriguing. As I’ve begun following the MMA scene I been surprised to see the frequent and prolific use of men’s boardshorts in the Octagon.
What’s an Octagon? An Octagon is the arena in which the would-be combatants clash in a flurry of kick-boxing, judo, karate, wrestling, and boxing. As I’ve watch the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) bouts, I observed how much advertising goes one. Banners, floor pads, T-shirts, and even the boardshorts now billboards for vitamins, supplements, and apparel brands.
In my opinion, the use of slightly customized boardshorts is a brilliant idea for the mixed martial arts scene. Why? Because mens boardshorts are very cool, literally, and from a fashion point of view. In most models, the hallmark drawstring waist is found in the inside of the waistband. But other then this they are near spitting-images to the age-old surf and skate style boardshorts made popular by Billabong, Rusty, Quicksilver, O’Neill, and Hurley. MMA specific boardshorts are often made from a blend of polyester and cotton, making them breathable and comfortable. This is exactly the type of comfort and breathability you need when grappling on the ground with a fellow combatant.
With the popularity of MMA, new street-fighter, or streetwear brands have emerged. Modern day gladiators now wear boardshorts made from TAPOUT, Silver Star, and Metal Mulisha. These new brands mark the image and lifestyle an aspiring MMA fighter seeks to portray. Watching an MMA or UFC bout is not for the faint-of-heart. It really is quite violent. But in addition to the physical nature of the sport, advertising plays a huge role. Men’s streetwear boardshorts take front and center in the Octagon for all the fans and warriors of tomorrow to see.
