Make a Garage More Secure and More Attractive
No CommentsTwo extremely easy and value-added DIY jobs involve the outward appearance of your home and one of its more vulnerable points of access – the garage. It is actually a quick and easy job to improve both of these areas and it not only will the garage look better, but the homeowner will feel better, too.
Garage security begins with good, solid garage door locks. This may sound simple, but many people generally use the hardware that comes with the house when they bought it or from the factory that made the garage door. Almost invariably these locks, handles, and slide-bars are the most inexpensive that can pass muster. Replacing these with more attractive and secure hardware can be a cheap way to add security to your home. Upgrades (while thinking about such a small project) might involve installing an automatic garage door opener. The simple mechanics of the opener (keeping the door forced closed until the motor engages) adds an unexpected and extra layer of security.
When changing out your old garage locks for newer and more stylish models may be the best time to spruce up the door itself. Check the seals and see if they are still supple and provide a good fit against the floor. This keeps drafts out. Also, since you have removed the old hardware and the door is devoid of obstacles (you are changing the lock after all), why not take the time and apply a fresh coat of garage door paint? Doing it before installing your new lock means you don’t have to worry about slopping paint on your handles and other hardware. Choose a paint that accents the new hardware. Or maybe consider a faux wood stain – almost any type garage door can be covered to simulate attractive wood grains, ranging from oak, to redwood, to teak.
When you’re done, you have a fresh clean expanse of garage door featuring shiny new handles and hardware. Thus, you have added both security and curb appeal in one job.
