Improve Urinary Health with an External Catheter
No CommentsAnyone suffering from a bladder control problem may be aware that is can be caused by an underlying condition and may end up being permanent. This type of debilitating condition can take a mental and physical toll on a person. Treating this condition in the long-term generally requires the use of an indwelling catheter, but this can often lead to further infections due to bacteria that thrive in the warm, moist environment around a catheter. One way to prevent problems with bacterial infections is by being careful with personal hygiene, but, for some, a changing of catheter style may be the solution.

It is well established that external catheters like condom catheters are far easier to use than indwelling types, but they also have a health benefit as well. Indwelling catheters are often left in place for days on end and the genital area not cleaned properly during this time. This is not true with a male external catheter because it doesn’t take a trained person to change one of them daily. This allows for a proper cleaning and stops the growth and spread of bacteria that can lead to a urinary tract infection or other illness. The health benefit of external catheters (such as a Texas catheter) has been proven in many different clinical studies versus the indwelling type.
There are substitutes for catheters, of course, in the wide range of male incontinence products on the market, but they are not without health concerns. Any warm and damp environment may lead to explosive bacterial growth and a person can be uncomfortable sitting in a soiled brief or laying on an incontinence pad for hours. A condom catheter is safe and comfortable to use and can allow a man to lead a normal life with full mobility. They come in a wide range of sizes and are available in many locations.
