How to Know When a New Hire is In Order for Your New Company
No CommentsFor a lot of people, the start of a new business involves one or two guys with a good idea and a ton of initiative. Getting through the first year, or first few years, can be very emotional. For this reason, hiring on your first few employees can feel like a risk–it’s hard to put trust in another person to help with your brainchild. But, in order to grow and be sustainable, you’re going to need some help. Here’s how you know when it’s right.
I am a Houston criminal attorney, and when I first opened my law office I was the head of accounting, advertising, reception–I ran the whole show. As those departments each began to require more time, and I realized that I couldn’t answer clients’ calls and win court cases simultaneously, it simply became impossible for me to do it all by myself. I resisted as long as I could, somehow refusing to accept that my company had grown beyond my limitations.
Finally, I started looking around for some other Houston criminal attorneys who could take some clients, and help out with the load back at the office. Within the first couple of months of hiring on another lawyer, my business grew more than it had in the six months leading up to it, which was both a result of having a partner to help me brainstorm ideas and having another person around to physically manage the extra client load.
Before long, my sole employee, and future partner in law, suggested that we hire a secretary, so that we would have more time for clients. The idea of adding yet another person to my staff seemed crazy, considering I had only recently had the whole office to myself, but eventually I caved.
Now my law firm is this orderly, professional place. I’ve been getting a completely regular amount of sleep, and even have time for my friends! The best part, is that my business is growing and starting to become profitable. I can not explain how much of this is a direct result of the people I work with.
If your small business feels like a hamster wheel with no end in sight, it’s probably time to take on a little help–you won’t regret it.
