Heating Up With Bikram Yoga
No CommentsBikram yoga was developed by the controversial yoga “guru” Bikram Choudhury and is frequently referred to as “hot yoga” since it’s practiced at very high temperatures. It consists of a specific 26 posture sequence that systematically works the entire body’s internal organs, muscles, ligaments and veins. The use of high heat is done with the understanding that a warmed up body is much more flexible, therefore more receptive to stretching and toning. The heat has the added benefit of flushing impurities and toxins out of the body through sweat.
There are countless Bikram studios situated around the world with certified teachers leading classes. The certification requirements are set up so that only pure forms of Bikram yoga is taught. The Bikram sequence is designed to inspire good health, proper weight control, muscle toning and overall well being.
When properly practiced, Bikram yoga benefits are numerous. For instance, this yoga method helps raise one’s overall energy level, improve blood circulation, solidify balance, create more coordination, discipline and personal focus. It can also greatly reduce risks from sports injuries, the effects of stress while relieving pain, reestablishing flexibility, strengthening the spine and toning the muscles. Every system of the body (circulatory, digestive, endocrine, muscular, nervous, respiratory and skeletal systems) need to function in balanced harmony in order to maintain optimum health, which are greatly affected by the Bikram sequence. The high heat used in combination with the poses also builds endurance, burns calories, flushes toxins and makes the muscles much more flexible.
New students might feel dizzy, nauseous or tired during their first class. This is very normal and happens to a lot of first timers until they get used to exercising in high heat. It’s highly recommended that students stay properly hydrated before and after class (but only taking small sips during the sequences). When the body gets the necessary amount of water, it has a better chance of tolerating exercising in a hot room. This uncomfortable sensation should go away after a few classes as the body gets used to cleansing itself through sweat.
While this school of yoga should be performed in hot rooms, it’s possible to practice the sequence at home, either with a DVD or with yoga classes online. Bikram can be attempted by anyone regardless of age or fitness level as long as the will exists to go through the program.
