Civil and Criminal Litigators
No CommentsA litigator is simply a lawyer or attorney who specializes in certain areas of the law, whether it is civil or criminal. There are many other areas of the law as well, though these are generally the two most common. There are both civil and criminal courts where these cases and tried. Individuals who are trying to resolve a dispute with each other go to civil court. Some of the more common reasons that people go to civil court include slander, libel, contract violations, fraud, and personal injury. If someone were to get injured on someone else’s property due to the negligence of the owner, they would most likely have a case for a civil suit.
One example of a civil suit which is particularly relevant right now is that of Mathew Couloute. He is a former prosecutor and Court TV analyst who filed lawsuits for libel and slander against two of the women who he used to be involved with romantically. These women posted certain remarks about Matt Couloute on a website which he calls blatantly slanderous though this particular offense is considered to be one of libel because they are written words as opposed to spoken.
Criminal litigators on the other hand are responsible for handling cases like murder, robbery, arson, and other types of crimes. In a criminal court there is a jury of randomly selected people along with a judge who is responsible for sentencing the person that is on trial. A civil court works a bit differently. Civil litigators are still responsible for defending their clients, although instead of a jury there is only a judge who makes the final decision as to who gets awarded what amount. Some of the civil law suits which are filed never make it to court because the judge assigned to it determines there is not enough evidence to proceed with it.
