Absorbing Sound With Dynamat
No CommentsDynamat can refer to many different types of insulation for the reduction of sound. In many places, we may hear sounds that are occurring outside of the space that we are occupying. These unwanted sounds are the cause of common frustrations that we want to reduce. Some people have experienced a decrease in their stress levels when they make their space quieter. Their drive home can be more serene, their home can sound more orderly, and even their computer can sound less labored. The different types of sound deadening material will all depend on the surface that you will apply it to. If a computer seems to rattle too much, a sheet of Dynamat can be applied to either side of the computer tower.
The material for reducing the sound of the computer should be one that will insulate sound but not heat. The typical pads used for sound insulation would work better for other purposes. For the computer, a sheet of aluminum covered foam would do well. The aluminum shield will help to transfer the heat to the exterior of the tower, where the surrounding air will help to drive the heat away from the computer’s operation. Sound pads such as Dynamat can have several uses around the home. Most of the consumers outside of the automotive realm will use the sound pads for reducing noise between walls. When considering a sound insulator, it is important to know the range of frequency reduction. When a house wall shakes, it is because the sound has encountered the natural resonance of the wall. Applying sound deadener will absorb some of the impact of the sound on that wall by distributing it to the material of the Dynamat.
These sound pads have a very broad resonance, which is to say that many different frequencies will find a place to vibrate in there. When sound finds a material to vibrate, it transfers energy to the material and cannot continue any longer. This process is the same for every frequency on the spectrum, but some are more easily absorbed than others. You may have noticed with a pair of earplugs that there are different quality levels. With the very cheaply made earplugs you will have a reduction in noise, but some of the sounds will be heard louder than the rest. This is because the sound insulation is not designed to dampen those frequencies. However, with a material that has a much more broad insulation, the sound will be reduced by a greater amount. Most of the noise in a household is in conversation and laughter. This is relatively easy to reduce because the typical speaking range of the voice lies between 175hz and 600hz.
A moderately dense material made from foam can reduce the sound from 100hz to 5khz and above. The higher frequencies are made by the emissions from electrical appliances and are easier to muffle. The lower frequencies have a much wider wave length, which means that they will require a more dense material to reduce the sound. Rooms that neighbor the theater room will experience louder music and sound effects. These can be bothersome at times, and will be a great reason for applying Dynamat material to the theater room’s walls. A high grade of material will be recommended because of the high prevalence of low frequencies in some movies. The lowest frequency that humans can hear is 16hz, which sound engineers have been able to amplify with subwoofers. This presents a challenge for sound deadening. For some applications of Dynamat materials, they will have two or more sheets of the common foam material, and in between they will have a thin sheet of a very dense material. The dense material will absorb much of the powerful waves of the lowest frequencies.
