A Million Miles from Haad Rin
No CommentsThe beach of Haad Yuan is just 5 km north of the party beach of Haad Rin Nok on the tropical island of Koh Phangan; and yet Haad Yuan seems like a million miles away from Koh Phangan’s central hub for hedonism.
Such is the genius of Thailand that the atmosphere can change radically from one beach to the next. It is one of the characteristics of traveling in Thailand that gives joy – you are never sure what is around the next corner. In the case of Haad Rin, around the corner is the beach that time forgot – Haad Yuan.
It is a beach that still has basic fan bungalows with coconut thatched roofs on the beach for just a few dollars a night. Nearly every luxury has been spared for most of the rooms on Haad Yuan. They have just a fan, a bed, a mosquito net and a veranda. The bungalows are some of the cheapest on the island and great for those people more concerned about being on a great beach then sitting around a swimming pool sipping cocktails.
The beach at Haad Yuan is a perfect small cove with rocks at either end. The sand is fine and the water is always warm and suitable for swimming. Behind the beach is thick jungle.
The only way to Haad Yuan is to walk a path from Haad Rin in the south or from Haad Thian from the north. Most people get to Haad Yuan by a longtail boat taxi for 200 or so Thai Baht.
The beach is peaceful and serene. No noise except that of the sea lapping on the shore. It seems so far removed from the continuous techno beats of Haad Rin.
The only one concession to luxury on Haad Yuan is the solitary mid-range resort of Centara Pariya. It has 39 concrete bungalows with air-con and cable TV nestled in the jungle. There is also a swimming pool. It is an unobtrusive resort that does not detract from the hippy idyll of Haad Yuan.
