A few pieces of dog training advice
No CommentsHere’s some tips on training your dog. It could be a new dog, a new-to-you dog (from the pound?) or an old dog that’s you’ve had for years.
- The best piece of dog training advice is of course to start young. Puppies are going to be easier to train because they’ve yet to establish all those annoying bad habits. And they do become habits – and breaking a habit for a dog is just as hard as breaking a habit for a person.
- The next piece of advice would be to socialize the dog. He needs to be out there regularly with other dogs and other people. Dogs are social animals, so it’s just plain mean to lock them up at home all day and then let them only visit with you at night.
- As with children, you have to be consistent. That means you and everyone in the dog’s immediate universe (family). If it’s not OK for the dog to jump on anyone, but they jump all over you when you come home from work, and that’s OK – what kind of a message are you sending?
- Overtraining – When things are going well with the training – it feels good to do even more training. But the dog can handle only so much, so slow it down and take your time with this. Dogs learn slowly over time. Time is your friend, not your enemy!
- Reward Good Behavior – You should reward good behavior right when it happens. Dogs remember the most recent activity. So if you reward them an hour later, they have no idea what its for, and so you haven’t built an association. This is only confusing for the dog.
- Seek Help – There is dog training, puppy classes, aggressive dog behavior training, discipline training, all kinds of training. Your local community center probably offers training all throughout the year.

So there you have it – some really basic tips for training your dog!
